A Game of Whac-A-Mole

Yahya Sinwar was born in Khan Yunis refugee camp in 1962 to a family who fled from Ashkelon during the 1948 Palestine War. At the age of 27, Sinwar was given four life sentences by Israel for the killing of “collaborators”. He spent 22 years in prison before being released in a prisoner exchange. Sinwar was believed to have been the architect behind the October 7th, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. He was killed in Rafah—10km from where he was born and grew up—on October 16th, 2024 in retaliation.

There are millions like him festering in Gaza.

What do you expect from someone with Sinwar’s history? What do you expect from the millions of kids surviving Gaza with no hope, no prospects and now with no homes and family?

Each time Israel disposes of one Hamas leader, another springs up to replace him.

By playing this deadly game of Whac-A-Mole, Netanyahu and his rightwing confederates—just as fanatical as Sinwar and Hamas—have opened a can of millions of worms set out to gnaw the heart out of their nation for generations to come.

Written by Emil Rem

An eccentric accountant becomes a writer of eccentric characters, in exotic locales, with each chapter taking us on a trip into the fascinating twisted world of Emil Rem. Born to a close knit middle class Muslim East Indian family in Dar-es-Salam in the 50’s, he is then moved to Maidenhead England at the age of five. The next twenty years are spent shuttling between England and East Africa, wearing a St. Christopher’s cross one minute and attending church, to wearing a green arm band and attending Muslim religious classes in Africa next minute. Moving to Canada, marrying a woman from the Philippines and having two boys only adds further texture to his stories.
